The Chi Garden

The Chi Garden

Sun Shan and Li Bo

Chi Garden is a small ecological farm. Food is medicine – by practicing natural farming, we focus on regenerative soil practices, inter-cropping, minimal tilling and weeding, and consciously reducing outside input. We produce a diverse salad mix with 20 vegetables, herbs and wild edibles from global east and west. We passionately preserve our harvest, especially through fermentation. Through cultivating diversity, we envision a garden space for community conversations around connected traditions and a shared future. We are at Main Street Farmers Market on Saturdays, and Just Food Farm Stand on Sundays, during summer months.

Temple’s Sugar Bush

Temple’s Sugar Bush

Our sugar bush covers 70 acres and contains approximately 5,000 taps. The property was clear-cut for firewood in the 1940s. The regeneration which followed would have included a variety of species such as ash, elm, basswood, hickory, birch, butternut, cherry and, of course, maple. Fortunately, the McEwen family and in particular Bob McEwen decided to develop this mixed bush into a working sugar bush. Through the 1960s and 70’s the bush became a demonstration wood lot, with the assistance of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, to show the value of proper sugar bush management and thinning techniques.

Take a walk on our Sugar Bush Trail and enjoy the pleasures of walking through a young forest and learn something of the plants and animals that have become part of it.

St Albert Cheese

St Albert Cheese

Did you know that St-Albert Cheese Coop is one of the oldest cooperatives in Canada?

As early as the late 19th century, master cheesemakers in a charming Eastern Ontario village were already producing a high quality Cheddar: the St-Albert. Founding President Louis Génier and his nine partners could hardly have imagined back on January 8, 1894, that their little cheese factory would shape the history of the entire community and become a true regional institution.

In 2014, as the Co-operative was ready to mark its 120th anniversary, it emerged from its ashes, stronger than ever, with modern facilities, increased production capacity and an iron will, with but one goal in mind: to continue the tradition by producing the best cheddars and dairy products in the country.

Purebread baker Andy Lofthouse trained in his home town of Edinburgh, Scotland, with the founder of the UK’s Real Bread Campaign. The bakery has since moved several times as it has grown, with spells at Hintonburg’s much-missed Back Lane Cafe, the basement kitchen of the welcoming Centretown United Church, and Little Italy’s Victory Caffe, before finding its permanent production facility in Ottawa’s east end.

Ottawa Valley Grain Products

Ottawa Valley Grain Products

In 1929, Nat Lindsay, founder of Ottawa Valley Grain Products (OVGP), purchased a small flour mill in Renfrew, Ontario. Within a few years, he turned to registered seed sales, split pea processing and feed manufacturing in response to the changing demands of local farmers.

It wasn’t long before OVGP acquired a large flour mill from Renfrew Industries, which was then converted to processing pot barley and seed grain. In 1942, OVGP acquired another mill in Shawville, Québec, followed by an outlet in Beachburg, Ontario in 1945. As part of the company’s expansion in the 1960s and 1970s, OVGP acquired a feed mill in Cobden, as well as the current-day mill location in Carp, which was originally the site of a flour mill that dates back all the way to 1827.

Today, OVGP proudly remains a family-owned and operated business in its fourth generation, and continues to stone mill all-natural, high-quality whole grain products right here in the Ottawa Valley. OVGP is proud to have contributed to the local economy for nearly 90 years, and remains committed to supporting the local agricultural ecosystem through the purchase of its products directly from farmers in the Ottawa Valley and surrounding area.

Products:

Nanabush Food Forests

Nanabush Food Forests

Shelley Lambert

We have established organic food forests within the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada with emphasis on permanent, restorative agriculture. By design, gardening in these forests builds soil structure, uses less water and yields a dramatic amount of highly nutritious food per square meter.

We encourage others to join in the movement to convert small fringe spaces to food production zones. We hope people who are interested in creating their own food forests to come visit our demonstration food forest at the Just Food farm within the City of Ottawa during our scheduled tours and workshops.
