Ottawa Organics

Matt Dudley

Local, Organic, Delivered
Certified organic fruits, vegetables and more from local farms and producers. Delivered to your home or office all year around.

Ottawa Organics began in 2007 with a dozen customers, a handful of local farms, and one employee. Over a decade later, we have grown to provide hundreds of weekly customers with products from over 20 local producers with a hard working team of eight employees.

Our Goals
To connect Ottawa residents with food that is local, organic, and vegetarian and to provide organic produce year round.

To reduce our impact on the environment. Not only is our organic produce easy on the earth, our delivery service is too! We minimize packaging by delivering your baskets in recycled cardboard boxes and reusable totes, return containers to farmers to re-use again and again, and offer products such as milk and yogurt in glass containers. And we support clean energy by being 100% bullfrog powered.

NU Grocery

NU Grocery

Valerie & Sia

It started with a book
It all started with a book that my mother gave me for Christmas: Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson.
I read the book in one sitting, fascinated by this family of four who managed to reduce their waste to a jar per year! The lifestyle Bea was advocating for made a lot of sense to me and I was inspired to embark on my own zero waste journey.
Part of adopting a zero waste lifestyle was to change the way I was doing my groceries and move away from single-use packaging. To avoid single-use I found a number of bulk stores where I could fill up my own containers. But there was no ONE store where I could find all my packaging-free groceries. I had to visit 4-6 stores on my grocery run, which was way too time-consuming.

The idea takes shape
I started imagining a zero waste grocery store where I could find everything I needed, and which would be specifically designed for zero waste shopping. After doing some research, I decided to open such a store in Ottawa.

Products:

NU Grocery is Ontario’s first zero waste grocery store. NU is also a platform to educate and raise awareness about waste. We’re on a mission to eliminate waste and reinvent consumption! NU is part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Community, a network of thousands of organizations working to accelerate the global transition to a circular economy.

Il Negozio Nicastro Glebe

This travel ticket also adorns the menu for our in store cafe. It’s the actual ticket that our father Salvatore Nicastro purchased to come to Canada in in 1959.

Like many others that passed through Pier 21 in Halifax, he brought with him his dreams, work ethics and old world culture.

In 1972 he was one of the founding owners of the original Nicastro Bros. Food in Centretown, a neighbourhood which was home to Ottawa’s Italian immigrant community. Over 40 years ago he helped introduce both imported Italian and local ingredients to our community.

Our two stores continue this passion and tradition. Il Negozio Nicastro is a celebration of food and Italian culture which seem to be one in the same.

Artizen Kombucha

Artizen Kombucha

Artizen Kombucha was started with a purpose: to make the best kombucha possible using the freshest ingredients to energize, revitalize and nourish the body. We wanted to make people healthier and happier and understood that true health and happiness starts from within. Ours was a mission of purpose, a mission to make the lives of those around us better.

Founded in 2016, we started making kombucha from a traditional recipe passed down by family members over generations. With this as a template, we adopted and evolved this recipe and modernize it to reflect what we as a collective human race have learned about health and nutrition. A friend had gifted us our very first SCOBY around this time and from there the mission was formed.

We make our kombucha and iced tea using organic ingredients and pristine, artesian deep well water. Our beverages are health promoting, refreshing and delicious. We strive to source only local ingredients whenever possible and support our community through this effort. We fully support everyone around us and thrive off of helping others. Whether this means paying it forward or lending a helping hand, we have always endeavoured to contribute to our community.

We hope you love what we do and we look forward to sharing our passion with you.

These old varieties are best suited to organic, low-input agriculture where no chemicals are used, providing a nutritious and distinct harvest, without the environmental impact of large-scale farming.

All About the Soup

All About The Soup

Andy, Charline and Jaden

We are a family run business, the three of us: Andy, Charline and our son, Jaden. We are a family who have always loved to cook, to try out new dishes, experimenting with locally sourced produce and exotic spices from the outer reaches of our amazing planet. And we are also a family on the go. We love outdoor activities. With this active lifestyle, choosing to be out there playing, we often prepared large batches of food to freeze so that we would have readily available healthy, substantial options to grab on the run.Soup is one of the few foods that freeze well, thus we decided to offer, to our local market, soups that are more nutritious, lower in sodium, and higher in protein than most that are currently available. Having lived with beloved family members with various digestive issues, we saw a need for a quickly accessible meal option that meets the demand of the wheat and dairy free diet. So we came to the realization that we could craft soups with wholesome ingredients and freshly grinded spices and create flavors and textures that are addictive, in a good way!
