Goodfood2u is a family business owned and operated by Jennifer Williams and Yannick Carrière. We were loyal customers of the business for many years before purchasing it from the original owner in 2013.

We are entrepreneurs, parents and sustainability activists. We have lived and worked on farms in Canada and overseas, and we understand how vital farming is. We know that our purchasing decisions have an impact and we want to ensure healthy and sustainable food is produced and available, now and for future generations.

We facilitate connection – between farmers and producers and those who enjoy the fruits of their labour. We work hard to bring our customers the best produce and grocery items. We know our actions have impact and we are shaping the world we want. Local food from local farms and producers, meals shared at tables with friends and family, vibrant local economies: sustainable solutions for future generations.

1. LOCAL – We source food that is local and organic, directly from the farm. When local farms are covered in snow, we order as close to home as possible.

2. FAIR TRADE – When not available locally, like in the case of bananas, we will offer Fair Trade whenever possible. For bananas, chocolate, coffee, etc., you can be sure we are using local Canadian and Certified Fair Trade suppliers.

3. NO GMOS – We do not and will not offer any products that contain GMOs.4. REAL FOOD – When we find interesting products that are not certified organic but are local, small-scale production and natural, we will offer them.

It started with a book
It all started with a book that my mother gave me for Christmas: Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson.
I read the book in one sitting, fascinated by this family of four who managed to reduce their waste to a jar per year! The lifestyle Bea was advocating for made a lot of sense to me and I was inspired to embark on my own zero waste journey.
Part of adopting a zero waste lifestyle was to change the way I was doing my groceries and move away from single-use packaging. To avoid single-use I found a number of bulk stores where I could fill up my own containers. But there was no ONE store where I could find all my packaging-free groceries. I had to visit 4-6 stores on my grocery run, which was way too time-consuming.

The idea takes shape
I started imagining a zero waste grocery store where I could find everything I needed, and which would be specifically designed for zero waste shopping. After doing some research, I decided to open such a store in Ottawa.

Products:	NU Grocery is Ontario’s first zero waste grocery store. NU is also a platform to educate and raise awareness about waste. We’re on a mission to eliminate waste and reinvent consumption! This travel ticket also adorns the menu for our in store cafe. It’s the actual ticket that our father Salvatore Nicastro purchased to come to Canada in in 1959.

Like many others that passed through Pier 21 in Halifax, he brought with him his dreams, work ethics and old world culture.

In 1972 he was one of the founding owners of the original Nicastro Bros. Food in Centretown, a neighbourhood which was home to Ottawa’s Italian immigrant community. Over 40 years ago he helped introduce both imported Italian and local ingredients to our community.

Our two stores continue this passion and tradition. Il Negozio Nicastro is a celebration of food and Italian culture which seem to be one in the same.
