Roots and Shoots Farm

Roots and Shoots Farm

Robin Turner & Jess Weatherhead

Ferme Roots and Shoots has been growing delicious, nutrient-rich, certified organic veggies since 2010. Jess and Robin started out on rented land in Manotick Station. Since then we’ve grown from 60 Community Supported Agriculture (veggie box) members in our first year to 400 in 2022. In 2015 we purchased the ol’ Nesbitt Farm in La Pêche, minutes from P19 in Gatineau Park. We now serve veggie baskets to over 500 families through our Summer, Fall and Winter organic basket program. We also offer a variety of seasonal flowers and host events throughout the summer to bring the community together and share this beautiful land.

We believe in fostering a sustainable future for our region, and creating long-term local employment to build local-food capacity in our area.

Roadapple Ranch

Roadapple Ranch

Mike Merriam, Kim Woolley, & Ryan Merriam

Mike and Kim started raising their own meat years ago, wanting to control the diet and lifestyle of their animals for the better.  When friends and family ate at the Ranch, they invariably commented on the quality and asked where the food came from, and voila, a business was born!

Thirty years later, at Roadapple Ranch breeds are selected for their meat quality, hardiness, and mothering abilities, so that they can produce the best quality product without chemical intervention.  We give our cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and bees the best lives possible, operating in a sustainable and ethical manner.

Proulx Sugarbush & Berry Farm

Proulx Sugarbush & Berry Farm

Gisele & Francois Proulx

“My grandfather traded syrup for grain,” says Francois, who represents the third Proulx generation on the 200-acre spread established in 1920. Today the 15-acre sugarbush with its 150 seat restaurant is open from end-February to mid-April, serving a traditional sugar bush brunch. In summer, berry picking, the petting barn, mazes and play parks are the focus for school tours, group events and family outings. There is even an annual berry festival, June 21 & 22 this year, which is followed by an annual pumpkin festival in the fall (Sept – October 31).  Gisele and Francois encourage visitors to “spend a day in the country, yet only minutes from the city.”

The Proulx family actively supports the Cumberland Resource Centre (CRC), the Navan Animal Rescue Corporation (NARC) and local sports fundraising. Funds raised from special activities are donated to the CRC and the NARC where animals are sheltered at the farm during the summer and receive plenty of petting and possibly inspire adoption.

Pickle Patch

The Pickle Patch

Aartje den Boer

At The Pickle Patch, everyone works. “The sheep graze to keep the pastures and lawn under control, the pigs ‘plough’ the fields and get them ready for planting and everybody fertilizes,” says Aartje den Boer. Hops and cucumbers are then planted and later harvested for beer-making and pickles. These industrious animals, born and raised at The Pickle Patch, are rewarded with tasty special treats like spent grains from Beau’s Brewery in Vankleek Hill and whey from Glengarry Fine Cheese.

Ottawa Valley Farm to Fork

Ottawa Valley Farm to Fork

Marshall Buchanan & Kathleen Lindhorst

We farm 275 acres in the beautiful & rugged Upper Ottawa Valley, near Eganville. After years of consulting, Kathleen (M.Sc. Nutrition, McGill 1997) and Marshall (M.Sc. Forestry & Environmental Studies, U of T, 1994), could see that convenience was replacing nutrition and industrial farms were supplying low-cost food at great cost to nature. In 2000 we started with 50 acres and combined our skills to grow produce and raise livestock in a caring and ecologically sustainable manner. In 2014 we opened our commercial kitchen to make gourmet foods using the organic (uncertified) meat and produce we grow. Currently, we offer agritourism accommodation and experiences on our regenerative agriculture, heritage farm.

Products:

Agritourism – farm stay, farm experiences, bike stop, event hall, public washroom.
vegetables, grass-fed Scottish Highland Beef, pasture-raised goat meat, organic eggs, gourmet foods made from our own ingredients such as potato-cheddar perogies, grass-fed beef sausage rolls, squash ravioli, quiche and butter tarts..

Location:

1320 Scotch Bush Road, Douglas, ON, K0J 1S0

Production Practices:

Vegetables – Organic Methods (uncertified).
Livestock – Scottish Highland cattle are raised in a closed herd, cow-calf operation giving us full control over animal care from birth to slaughter. We do not buy stockers. Cattle are exclusively grass-fed and are antibiotic and hormone free. Highland Cattle are particularly well suited to an exclusive grass-fed diet. Our goats range pastures and forests.
