VLN stands for ‘vario labori natus’, translates as ‘born to be useful’ and as a motto has inspired the family since 1970.

Thirty years later, Ivan, his wife Jocelyne and their children have transformed a childhood hobby into a thriving maple syrup business. Originally a dairy farm, this third generation family enterprise survives on cash crops and maple products today. French meets English in our region, as hills meet valley, and arable fields meet temperate hardwood forests. Ferme et Forêt blurs this line between the cultivated and the wild. We harvest and sell juicy wild plums, forest growing mushrooms, golden maple syrup, and more. Today, Sylvain raises approximately 20,000 chickens and 2,000 turkeys annually in a healthy, technically sophisticated environment. Since its debut, the mission of Saveurs des Monts has been to offer poultry products that are “healthy and delicious.”

Bob Dobson’s cattle are raised outside in the open air of pasture in summer or behind natural wind blocks created by trees in the winter. They enjoy excellent quality of pasture and hay-forage from farm fields that have been in the family for over 150 years.
The cattle are never treated with antibiotics or hormones and are never fed grain during any part of their life. Bob believes in creating a healthy ecosystem on his farm – keeping spaces for wildlife such as birds and maintaining healthy waterways ensure happy and healthy cattle as well as preserving a more natural environment.

Dobson’s Grassfed beef is tender, has a host of health benefits, and flavour that can’t be beat. The farm also offers raspberries and elderberry products.

Eggs, “the way they’re supposed to taste,” is the promise that John and Cora Beking make to their customers. They currently manage a flock of 14,000 chickens which they house in barns that were retooled in 2005 into ‘loose housing’ – practice commonly used in the 1960s. This roam-free system results in more active, healthier birds. Eggs are graded on site and prompt delivery ensures the freshness of the eggs reaching the consumer.

Food safety is essential and Bekings Poultry Farm is certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and adheres to the farm food safety practices of HACCP. Firm believers in the local food movement, the Bekings welcome the increased consumer interest in adhering to protocols such as the 100 mile diet.
