Green Door Restaurant

The Green Door Restaurant

Ron Farmer, Jenny Ong, and Charles Miller, Owners

“We specialize in high quality, wholesome foods and baked goods made from ingredients that are locally grown and produced,” says Ron Farmer when he discusses the philosophy of The Green Door. With five decades of experience in the food industry between them (bakery, restaurant, catering, natural foods store, organic gardening), they bring to the restaurant the expertise necessary to fulfill their promise that everything on the extensive menu is prepared on site.

Established in 1988, The Green Door qualifies as “Ottawa’s oldest and best known vegetarian restaurant.”  The menu reflects the seasonal harvest of locally grown organic produce and the casual ambiance is enjoyable for both newcomers and regulars.  They offer a catering service for large and small groups.  ‘The Green Door Cookbook, 2nd edition’ is available, as are gift cards and funky t-shirts featuring Ron’s original art.

Ron, Jenny, and Charles are firm advocates for the food security benefits that are derived from supporting local growers and producers.

Absinthe Cafe

Absinthe Cafe

Patrick Garland, Owner & Chef

Chef Patrick Garland, who trained at The Pacific Rim Culinary Institute, named his restaurant Absinthe to evoke the 19th century Parisien cafes where the intoxicating “green fairy” became bohemian society’s favourite beverage. The theme is aptly expressed in the comfortable decor, affable service, French- influenced cuisine, and indeed the availability of several brands of absinthe. Patrick is a long time, passionate supporter of area farmers and his “100 mile menu” features meats, cheeses and produce from eastern Ontario and western Quebec, fulfilling a commitment to, “eating well” and preparing food, “of the people, for the people”. Since its debut, Absinthe has won three Epicurean Awards and the 2008 Silver Spoon Award.

Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm

Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm

Earl Stanley

Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm has been open for business since 1993, though the farm has been in the family since 1786. It is a diverse business with its roots in maple trees and of course the delicious liquid gold that comes from those trees, maple syrup. The 200-year old sugar bush is open from early March through mid April and features a petting farm, a heritage sugar shack, museum, tractor-drawn wagon rides and a pancake breakfast at the 300-seat Pancake House restaurant.

Earl says that “a love of people” inspired the transformation of the farm to its current state as a popular reception locale for weddings, corporate functions and large or small private parties.
