Our focus is on quality. We buy all Canadian products, with a preference for local producers. Our prime cuts are properly aged and expertly trimmed. For those looking for healthier choices, we offer a wide range of antibiotic/ hormone-free, certified organic, and grass-fed products. Our sausages and deli are gluten and nitrate free. Almost all of our products are made in house, including our homestyle meals which can be tailored to suit special diets.

About Our Farms
We work hard with small family-owned farms in the Ottawa Valley to provide genuine farm orders that work for every customer. All the farms we partner with date back to the early 1800s. They use zero non-therapeutic antibiotics or hormones, all their animals are free-range, and 100% grass-fed. We coordinate with these family farms and our customers to ensure you only get what you want. All meat is inspected provincially or federally, guaranteeing that our meat is the highest quality possible.

Ottawa Organics began in 2007 with a dozen customers, a handful of local farms, and one employee. Over a decade later, we have grown to provide hundreds of weekly customers with products from over 20 local producers with a hard working team of eight employees.

Our Goals
To connect Ottawa residents with food that is local, organic, and vegetarian and to provide organic produce year round.

To reduce our impact on the environment. Not only is our organic produce easy on the earth, our delivery service is too! We minimize packaging by delivering your baskets in recycled cardboard boxes and reusable totes, return containers to farmers to re-use again and again, and offer products such as milk and yogurt in glass containers. And we support clean energy by being 100% bullfrog powered.

It started with a book
It all started with a book that my mother gave me for Christmas: Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson.
I read the book in one sitting, fascinated by this family of four who managed to reduce their waste to a jar per year! The lifestyle Bea was advocating for made a lot of sense to me and I was inspired to embark on my own zero waste journey.
Part of adopting a zero waste lifestyle was to change the way I was doing my groceries and move away from single-use packaging. To avoid single-use I found a number of bulk stores where I could fill up my own containers. But there was no ONE store where I could find all my packaging-free groceries. I had to visit 4-6 stores on my grocery run, which was way too time-consuming.

The idea takes shape
I started imagining a zero waste grocery store where I could find everything I needed, and which would be specifically designed for zero waste shopping. After doing some research, I decided to open such a store in Ottawa.

We are a family owned and operated butcher shop/grocery store, located in the heart of Hintonburg in Ottawa (between Parkdale Ave and Preston Street). We specialize in fresh cut meats with a butcher on site, fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade meals made in-house, specialty cheeses, deli meats and a variety of grocery products.

This travel ticket also adorns the menu for our in store cafe. It’s the actual ticket that our father Salvatore Nicastro purchased to come to Canada in in 1959.

Like many others that passed through Pier 21 in Halifax, he brought with him his dreams, work ethics and old world culture.

In 1972 he was one of the founding owners of the original Nicastro Bros. Food in Centretown, a neighbourhood which was home to Ottawa’s Italian immigrant community. Over 40 years ago he helped introduce both imported Italian and local ingredients to our community.

Our two stores continue this passion and tradition. Il Negozio Nicastro is a celebration of food and Italian culture which seem to be one in the same.
